Robust Russian period meller "The Edge" is less interested in the politics or injustices of its chosen milieu -- Siberian prison camps just after WWII -- than in a glowering hero's steely machismo and the romance of old steam-engine trains. Vet helmer Alexey Uchitel's latest may fall between commercial and arthouse terrain for some international buyers, but outside home territories, it could pick up a healthy share of specialized home-format sales. It's slated as Russia's 2010 Oscar submission.
Scenarist Dunia Smirnova debuted as a film director with her melodrama “Relations”
"Relations" is a film about adultery, about romance between a woman from Saint-Petersburg and a man from Moscow; both of them are happy in their family life and well-doing socially.
A film by Alexey Uchitel obtained Grand-Prix on “Kinotavr”. It was – absolutely deservedly – called one of the brightest movies. However, there were individuals, accusing the director of blasphemy by showing some not very nice touches of the famous Russian writer’s nature. Everyone knows that Bunin’s personality was not easy. Some people know that the last love of the writer left him for the femme fatale named Marga. The whole thing is filmed very delicately – some viewers were surprised that there were no sexual scenes in the movie.

“Giselle’s Mania”, a feature debut of a documentary director Alexey Uchitel and scenarist Dunia Smirnova, is the thing everyone’s talking about these days. Having not been finished yet, the film collected a bunch of young, talented, famous and just fashionable people of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg as participants, was overgrowing with legends. For the period of total financial and productional deficience it was unusual – “Giselle’s Mania” risked remaining myths, a bomond hallucination. However, due to the efforts of Roskomkino, the “Lenfilm” studio and the Rock Films the film was finished and demonstrated in both capitals.

Even in the midst of battles in Cannes it is still impossible to turn away from home releases and football, of course. On May 29, a week prior to the Eurocup start, a new film “The Game” by Alexander Rogozhkin is to see the world. Truly one of the most expected films of the year. First, it is interesting, what “peculiarity” the father of other “National peculiarities” has found in our football? Second: is it really true that it shows our players become the World Champions? Moreover, in a championship held in Moscow. Which is supposed to be 2014 or 2018? True or not - I won’t reveal the secret. All the more so the movie fools you a great deal. First this gives the heebie-jeebies, then you start liking it.
Can a film about football be more exciting than the game itself?
Those, who don’t believe that the Russian team can do good at the Eurocup must see the new film by Alexander Rogozhkin. It shows our team come through to the final of the World Championship.
What does the classic of national cinematography, author of “The Peculiarities of Russian Hunting” and “The Cuckoo” think of real football is revealed in this exclusive interview
"We have two problems – lack of good screenplays and our habit to produce films only for home usage. “It’s wrong!” – says the triumpher of the latest MIFF Alexey Uchitel. The 27-th Moscow International Film Festival finished with “teacher’s day” (“Uchitel” in Russian means “Teacher” – trans. note). “Golden Georgy” was received by the author of “Dreaming of Space”. It’s a paradox, but the 53-years old Uvhitel can be still considered a beginner in film directing – “Space” is his fourth feature film.

"His Wife’s Diary" – This is the title of a new film by Alexey Uchitel, the screenplay by Dunia Smirnova, which can be seen tonight at the MIFF special demonstration in “Pushkinsky”. The film shows the previously unknown by most readers side of life of Ivan Bunin – the classic Russian writer, who received the Nobel Prize in 1933.
"Sources for the film are mostly the diaries of Bunin’s wife, of Bunin himself, of the writer Gurov, the diary of Galina Kuznetsova, which was called “Grass Diary”. The thing is that “Grass Diary” says not a single word about any romance between Bunin and Galina. Everything is blurred, like “I’m a student and that’s it”. Although the story had been known by the whole emigration back then. That’s why, if we ever added something of our own, that could be only details.
From the middle of the week a more intensive life started on “Kinotavr”, its culmination expected on weekend. Bad weather and concentration of the main first demonstrations (“It Doesn’t Hurt” by Alexey Balabanov and “Relations” by Avdotia Smirnova) made Andrey Plakhov strike a preliminary balance to the festival.
Judging from critics’ marks in the festival journal, as long as from what they say in back rooms, no film has so far caused any unanimous admiration and become a leader. The internal line of the competition is a struggle – not even between generations, but between the cinematographic establishment of the 90-ies and those, who would like to take their place on the podium.

Two years ago critics were speaking different of this film. Not nice: “What is shown is a so-called “Swedish family”, women-lesbians, a man-polygamist”. Or nice:
Incredibly beautiful, exquisite film”. All this is about “His Wife’s Diary” by Alexey Uchitel.
The new film “Captive’ by Alexey Uchitel (“Giselle’s Mania”, “His Wife’s Diary”, “Dreaming of Space”) just appeared on the screens. As soon as this happened the director started working on a new project “Gustav”, the original screenplay for which wrote Alexander Gonorovsky
«The vicktory of our hockey team on the World Championship did for the image of Russia and uniting of people more than all kinds of PR.”
Interview with the film director Alexey Uchitel
The film by Alexey Uchitel is based on a story by Vladimir Makanin and is about one small episode of the war in Chechnya – two Russian soldiers capture a Chechen youth and intend to exchange him for their captured friend. Besides, the youth is supposed to guide them along mountain trails to a trapped Russian troop. On their way one of the soldiers starts feeling compassion to the captured, however, at the end the soldiers kill the young man for the sake of not being caught by the enemy. Before the film was demonstrated, it had been called “Russian Brokeback Mountain” and the director promised to put the law to anyone who dares write about non-traditional love in his movie. The fisrt demonstration of the film was on “Kinotavr” and on September 11 it will appear on the sreens. Alexey Uchitel spoke to Marina Latysheva, an RBK correspondent, about his film and about the world industry of films dedicated to war.
Director Rogozhkin discovered the talent of a medium in the actor.
The first demonstration of “The Game” – a film by Alexander Rogozhkin, the author of “The Peculiarities of Russian Hunting”, “The Cuckoo” and other popular films took place in Moscow the other day. The new film should be appreciated by football fans. Since, according to Rogozhkin, our team is going to win the World Championship!
“Captive” appeared on the screens after the great success in the Carlsbad Festival, where it was awarded for “best director”. And accompanied with a scandal: our critics found some similarities with “Brokeback Mountain” and the director threatened to sue those who would homosexual motives in the film. Both things will do good for the movie’s promotion.

According to some reviews at Kinotavr, Alexey Uchitel’s “Captive” is the director’s best film to date
Before shooting began, the film had already been surrounded with legends that Alexey Uchitel was throwing down a challenge to Ang Lee and making a Russian version of “Brokeback Mountain”. People were confused by the story that the film was based on, Vladimir Makanin’s “A Prisoner from the Caucasus”, where two men feel waves of emotion towards each other. Perhaps some will find these feelings are missing in the film. But with a less sensational plot, the film gains a profundity and ambiguity that was not present in the story.
Alexey Uchitel has made a new chef-d-oevre film about relations between two people and about the ability of human soul to stay alive where life is impossible. About the power of unmotivated antissipation which is always stronger than hate.
“History has proved many times that any war is a failure, a dead end. However, there always are crazy leaders who are ready to pay any prize for realization of their political ambitions. That is scary...
“Captive”, the new film by Alexey Uchitel, got the prize for Best Director at the latest festival in Karlovy Vary. Critics unanimously called it the director’s best work. The plot of the film is based on the story by Vladimir Makanin. Telling about the relationship between two Russian soldiers and a Chechen gunman they had captured.
There’s a war on the South, the Olympic Games on the Notrh and cinema in Vyborg.
The opening ceremony of the “Windows” was a little less solemn and extravagant compared to the one in Beijing.
A small orchestra of cinematographic hopes took the lead of several dozens of Russian cinematographers and a small train of their admirers. Short welcome speeches were held by the entrance of the main Cinema theatre and the public headed inside, to the hall, where Alena Babenko, the actress, introduced the Jury of the festival
