During the Soviet Union film production was booming, but in the 1990's the studio system collapsed. It began to pick up in the early 2000's as Russia became wealthier. But since the start of the economic downturn, the film industry suffered serious set-backs. We will discuss the past, present and future of Russian cinema with Director and Producer Gerard MacCarthy and comments from other film experts both in Russia and the UK.

Though there were a great many surprises the morning when the Golden Globe nominations were announced; and as always, many eyes were on the race for Best Foreign Language film. While the Golden Globes aren’t always the most accurate barometer of the Foreign Language nominees for the Academy Awards (as the eligibility rules laid forth by both bodies in this race are very different), the Golden Globe nominations can provide some very real momentum for films that have been submitted to the Academy for consideration for the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired all U.S. rights to The Edge, Russia’s submission for the foreign-language film Oscar.
The feature, set in a Siberian gulag after the end of Word War II, also is nominated for a Golden Globe as best foreign-language film.

The Berlinale Co-Production Market is a two-and-a-half-day event for about 450 international producers, sales agents, distributors as well as broadcasting and funding representatives active in the field of co-production.
Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick describes the Berlinale Co-Production Market as “a home for international producers and financiers attending the Berlinale.” Here they find what they usually look for at a festival: high-quality international projects, excellent business contacts and new opportunities for co-operations.
Desember 15th
Japanese distributor PIONIWA has picked up the rights for Dreaming of Space by Alexey Uchitel, the best film of the Moscow Film Festival 2005 and winner of the Golden Eagle Award 2005.
November 15th
The winner of the Cottbus Film Festival of the Eastern European Cinema 2008 was film Captive by Alexey Uchitel (Rock Film). This year Captive’s producer Kira Saksaganskaya was member of the International Jury of the festival and Rock Film Studio presented its project Little People at the East West Co-production market Connecting Cottbus.
November 11th
The festival took place October 20th - November 11th in Kaliningrad, organized by the European commission delegation in Russia, embassies, consulates and cultural centers of the EU countries in Russia together with cinema Zarya.

The film “Captive” by Alexey Uchitel has been invited to participate in the special Russian program of the Leids Film Festival, Netherlands, that takes place October 27 – November 1, 2009. Uchitel’s film will also be showcased in the 25th International Film Festival in Haifa (October 3-10, 2009), the major film event in Israel that has about 180 000 participants each year.

“Captive” won the Critic's choice award at the Russian Resurrection Festival, which was held October 29 - November 16 in all big cities of Australia.
